CJ’s BUTTer® Review and Giveaway

If you’ve been around the cloth diapering community for any length of time, you’re sure to have heard of CJ’s BUTTer®. It’s one of those few creams that are safe for use with cloth diapers, but it has so many more uses than just healing diaper rashes. Between the rave reviews of how effective it is for diaper rashes and the equally rave reviews on their scents, we were very interested in trying it out for ourselves. After reviewing several of their products, we are very excited to share this mom-based company with you!

CJ S. Miller started CJ’s BUTTer® in her kitchen out of determination to make a cloth diaper friendly diaper cream for her own children. The Original CJ’s BUTTer® formula she created proved not only to be the best all natural diaper cream available, but there have literally been more than 20 uses found for this amazing product. Since these humble beginnings CJ has added over a dozen additional products to the CJ’s BUTTer® product line many of which are also multi-taskers. All of CJ’s BUTTer® products are handcrafted using only carefully selected ingredients, and most are available in over 3 dozen scent options.

We were thrilled to find that Heather, one of the Customer Care Representatives from CJ’s, had included mostly scents from their Essential Oils collection because they are more natural than the frangrances. Another bonus was the info she included on eczema for our sensitive-skinned kiddos. We were amazed at how many samples we received as well as the thought that went into selecting the scents we tried, including some that are clinically proven to help eczema (more on that later)!

Melissa’s Thoughts:

I’ve been hearing great things about CJ’s BUTTer® for awhile now. Every so often at the weekly Twitter #clothdiapers chat (which you should definitely check out, by the way! Monday nights at 8pm CST), someone will ask for a cloth diaper safe rash ointment, and without fail at least one person mentions CJ’s BUTTer®.

We were given the opportunity to review a wide variety of CJ’s products. It’s probably easiest if I list everything I got to try, including scents, followed by my thoughts on each product.

CJ’s BUTTer® Small Stick: Lavender Essential Oil – This is so handy! I don’t know why more rash ointments don’t come in stick form, but I loved using this. It made application so much faster, not to mention way less messy! The lavender essential oil provides a strong, but pleasant, healing sort of smell, which I loved. My son only gets diaper rashes when I’ve had dairy, and then there isn’t much that will heal it, but I did use this several times to provide some comfort when he had redness, and it did seem to help.

CJ’s BUTTer® Original: Sweet Orange, Madagascar, Unscented, and Lavender & Tea Tree scents – Ok, this stuff is awesome. I have very dry skin, and I used it multiple times as a lotion for myself, especially in areas I have a lot of trouble with, like my knees. So indulgent and yummy feeling! For treating a diaper rash or other irritation, I think my first choice would be the Lavender & Tea Tree. As I mentioned with the stick form, the lavender as a healing smell that I love, and tea tree oil helps fight germs. But for other uses, I loved both the Sweet Orange and the Madagascar! I just wanted to BATHE in the Sweet Orange, which is a deliciously citrus smell. Madagascar is a light, fruity smell, not quite as strong as the Sweet Orange, but still so delicious!

CJ’s BUTTer®, Vegan Formula: All Natural Mango, Sugar & Mint  - This stuff was just as creamy, soothing, and moisturizing as the original formula, but vegan for those who prefer that. And oh my word, this was my favorite smell of the bunch, and that’s saying a lot. I’m resisting the urge to just sit here and sniff the jar while I write this. Amazing.

CJ’s BUTTer®, Lip Balm: Raspberry Lemonade - The same creamy, moisturizing feeling as the creams, but in a lip balm!! Yes, please! Again, the smell was to die for. The only thing I will mention with this is although it comes in a “stick” type form, its a bit softer than most traditional chapsticks (probably because it doesn’t have all the yuck that those do!), and I felt like it was hard to apply unless I used my fingers. Not a problem for me, but something I did want to point out.

CJ’s Creamy Lotion, Unscented and Lullaby Baby - This is a great lotion! Lightweight, while still being creamy and very moisturizing. I love the Lullaby Baby scent, too! Perfect scent for baby snuggles, without being overpowering.

CJ’s BUTTer® PLUS – This is the stuff to get if you are fighting a resistant, hard to treat rash. Lots of coconut oil, sesame oil, and neem oil. This does have a distinctive smell, but I didn’t find it overpowering or unpleasant.

So, I know that was a lot, but I’ll sum it up. Even with the wide variety of products and scents I was able to review, I did not come across anything I disliked! I don’t think you can go wrong with any of this company’s products!

 Jeniffer’s Thoughts:

When we first opened our packages, I was amazed at all the different samples that we were sent! There were SO many scents and products to try out! I think I spent the next 30 minutes just smelling them all. I love scented lotions, but over the past few years, I’ve developed an allergy to many stong smelling products. This coupled with my sensitive skin means that I love finding a company where their products are made of natural ingredients and still have great scents. CJ’s Unique Boutique fills all of that and more!

CJ’s BUTTer® Small Stick: Lavender and Tea Tree Oil - I loved my stick…for the two or three days that I had it! Abby sucked on the end of it, and it stuck to the top of the tube. Thankfully, Heather explained that I can save my stick! I’m very excited about being able to use it again! With the stick, I don’t have to worry about putting too much or too little on her bum even though I often put too much when I’m using the cream from the tubs. I also love that it is a much cleaner way to apply the cream and that it’s easy to find in my diaper bag. The Lavender and Tea Tree Oil scent is strong because it’s made of essential oils. But those oils help to calm, soothe, and heal, which makes this particular scent especially awesome for use on the bum!

CJ’s BUTTer® Original Formula: Tea Tree Essential Oil, Frankincense & Myrrh, Sensuality, and Unscented –  I seriously love this stuff! I’ve used it as a diaper rash cream, as lotion, on chapped skin, and even on my preggo hemorrhoids with great results! The Original Formula feels creamy when applicating and can seem greasy for a minute or two, but it quickly absorbs into the skin, leaving nothing behind. I prefer the Tea Tree Essential Oil, which is a strong tea tree scent, and Frankincense & Myrrh, a warm, spicy scent, to Sensuality, which is a lighter blend of ylang ylang and myrrh.

CJ’s BUTTer®, Vegan Formula: Indigenous - The Vegan Formula is just that: a version of the Original Formula that is completely vegan and coconut oil free. It works just like the Original Formula, going on creamy and absorbing quickly into the skin. The Indigenous scent that I received smells amazing! It’s a nice blend of cedar, sage, and coriander, so it smells both light and earthy.

CJ’s BUTTer®, Lip Balm: Strawberrries & Cream – I tend to have dry lips, and chapsticks don’t always work. But CJ’s BUTTer® Lip Balm works! I use the stick straight on my lips, which leaves them coated evenly and also brings out their natural, not-dry color. I love how bright my lips look after using the Lip Balm, and I’ll often use it even when I don’t necessarily need it. I’ve even used the Lip Balm on Abby’s hair to calm the fly aways. And with the Strawberries & Cream scent and flavor, she smells delicious!

CJ’s Creamy Lotion, Lavender and Tea Tree Oil and My Pixie Pie - Oh my goodness. I think the Creamy Lotion is my second favorite product, right under the Lip Balm. While the Original Formula can be used as a lotion, the Creamy Lotion is easier to apply. I’ve used it after shaving my legs to have a super-smooth finish, but my favorite use is on my itchy, stretch-mark-prone belly. The Lavender and Tea Tree Oil scent is as strong as the stick, and I love how calming it is. But my all-time-favorite scent is My Pixie Pie, which is a mixture of cherries and toasted almonds with hints of vanilla and coconut. In other words, it’s an absolutely delicious scent that makes me feel like I’m enjoying a beautiful day at the beach. I want to bathe in it. Every day.

CJ’s BUTTer® PLUS – This particular version of CJ’s BUTTer® only comes in one scent. It’s not scented, per se, but it does have a distinct seedy smell. The sesame oil, vitamin E, and neem oil combine to specifically fight yeast in all forms: yeast infections, athelete’s foot, and thrush. After using it myself for about a week, I can definitely say that it works! It probably would have taken less time if I had used it more often, though I immediately noticed less burning and irritation after applying it. I recommend it for all of your family’s yeast issues.

After using several of CJ’s products, I can understand why there’s so much hype! All of these products smell wonderful, but even better? They work! I did want to mention that while I did use them on my daughter’s eczema rash, they didn’t make it any better or worse. Of course, most of the scents we received are made from essential oils, so they were less likely to irritate her skin anyway.

If you are hoping to use any of these products on sensitive or eczema-prone skin, I would suggest avoiding the fragrances. Heather, the Customer Care Representative from CJ’s, also mentioned that while they have had people who have seen results with all fragrances, they recommend the Unscented, Lavender, Lavender and Tea Tree, and Tea Tree scents when dealing with eczema. Lavender and Tea Tree Essential Oils have actually been clinically proven to help treat eczema, and they leave a nice, clean scent, as well.

The bottom line? CJ’s BUTTer® is a versatile product from a great company. Every product I have tried is one that I highly recommend for anyone, not just people who cloth diaper or are looking for a better diaper rash cream! If you haven’t, you should definitely have a look around the CJ’s Unique Boutique website. There’s something for everyone!
