Screen-Free Week Wake Up Call

I’m not sure if you have heard about Screen-Free Week. It’s an annual celebration encouraging families to spend an entire week unplugged. Families are encouraged not just to unplug, but to look for fun, creative activities to do together to springboard a life style of less screen time. You can read more about it here.

We aren’t doing the full challenge this time. I was sick all last week with bronchitis (hence the reason I didn’t blog at all!), and I am still recovering. Unfortunately, being sick has meant way to much screen time for the munchkins lately. Screen-Free Week has definitely reminded me how much excess time we are all spending in front of screens. A few years ago we had a strict, “No tv during the week” policy, which I loved. I really want to get us back there!

So although we aren’t participating today, we will be starting the challenge tomorrow. I will still have some screen time for blog work, etc, but I’m going to try to keep it as limited as possible. After all, I know that I’m as guilty as anyone of spending to much time in front of screens!

Also, I know when it comes right down to it, my kids will find unplugging completely worth it if it means I’m more plugged in to them!

So what will we do unplugged?

  • Play games
  • Build forts/tents/castles
  • Read lots of books
  • Go to the park (we have LLL at the park this week AND a homeschool park day!)
  • Draw
  • Play outside
  • Write stories
  • Cuddle
  • Play hide-and-seek
  • Play with blocks
  • Color

Is your family participating in Screen-Free Week? How do you make sure screen time doesn’t take over?

The Great Cloth Diaper Change 2012!

Last Saturday (has it already been nearly a week??), Melissa and I woke up early and, fortified with coffee, drove 2 hours to Memphis, Tennessee. Why? The Great Cloth Diaper Change, of course! We helped put together this year’s event (well, as much as we could with being 2 hours away), and we had a blast meeting many of the moms that we talk to regularly on the Cloth Diaper Memphis Facebook group.

There was a cold front that came in the morning before the Change, so while Melissa, the toddlers (!!), and I were busy helping to get everyone registered, we were pretty cold. I didn’t get any pictures of people in line, either. But here are some pictures that I did get.

In all, our group changed 65 babies. We were thrilled to be part of the Great Cloth Diaper Change this year! We made some great memories, and we were able to enjoy some time together…even if my GPS did almost get us lost on the way back. ;)

Did you participate in the Great Cloth Diaper Change this year? Where? If you didn’t, are you hoping to next year?

Breastfeeding Blog Hop: Can they be…smaller??

Breastfeeeding Blog Hop

This post is part of the weekly breastfeeding blog hop, hosted by The Slacker Mom, and co-hosted by The Gnome’s Mom and Happiness Redefined. This week’s topic is “Body Modification.”

Honestly, I never imagined that I would be sharing this. Much less here.

First, let me say that I’ve never been interested enough in the usual “body modification” to actually do anything. When I was younger, I thought a belly button ring would be cool, but I never got one. And since my miscarriages, I’ve thought about getting a couple of smaller tattoos for my babies, but I’ve never had the guts to get one. Then again, I usually avoid jewelry altogether for the most part (not because of any particular beliefs but because, like makeup, it’s just another thing to do…and I really don’t care enough to do it!)

But. Breast reduction sounded awesome when I was getting ready to leave for college.

I lived in an area where a B cup was pretty normal. My mom was never bigger than a C, and my sisters seem to be following her in that regards. Me? I reached DD before graduating high school. To say that I felt out of place is mild. The thought of getting bigger during pregnancy scared me, and I still secretly hope that breastfeeding will, in the end, shrink the girls just a bit.

It probably didn’t help when I had to stuff my nipples into Abby’s mouth just after she was born. But I’ve learned something in the past 14 months. My breasts aren’t ginormous. There are women with much bigger breasts than me, and they breastfeed just fine. My breasts really do have a purpose other than making modesty ridiculously difficult. I’ve come to appreciate them instead of resent them, and that appreciation grows every day.

I may not get a breast reduction after all. Maybe a lift? ;)

Have you dealt with wanting ”body modification?” Or did you have something done that cause problems later on? Share with us!
