Pregnancy Update #1: 11 weeks

I’ve talked about it a little here and there, but I guess it’s time for an official post on this whole pregnancy thing.

I know I’m pregnant, but it doesn’t seem real. Even with the nausea, the food aversions, the extreme exhaustion, and my dwindling supply of breastmilk (as my breasts get larger, oddly enough). I’ve even put off going to the doctor because, well, when you’ve had a few really bad visits that showed you were miscarrying, it’s hard to get excited. Even after my perfect pregnancy with Abby.

According to my LMP, I’m 11 weeks along. Last time, those early weeks seemed to drag on forever, so it surprises me how quickly these 11 weeks have passed. Of course, this time we had the holidays in the beginning, and I also have an 11 month old that I’m struggling to keep up with.

This week, according to BabyCenter, my baby, just over 1 1/2 inches long and about the size of a fig, is now almost fully formed. Her hands will soon open and close into fists, tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under her gums, and some of her bones are beginning to harden.

She’s already busy kicking and stretching, and her tiny movements are so effortless they look like water ballet. These movements will become more frequent as her body grows and becomes more developed and functional.

If I really am 11 weeks (I ended up being due about a week and a half later with Abby than what my LMP “predicted”), then that means I’ll be popping soon! I definitely looked pregnant with Abby around 13 weeks, though this time I haven’t gained nearly as much. I guess that’s what happens when you’re still breastfeeding and you’re not sitting on the couch all day. It’s also probably due to the fact that I’m not nearly as hungry as I was last time either. Nausea and heartburn have also been kicking my butt here lately, which is a good sign but never fun.

I had planned on sharing a baby bump picture, but since I had a stomach bug for the past couple of days, you really can’t tell. At all. And I may be too tired to put a picture up right now. We’ll see if I can muster up enough energy to post one on Twitter here soon. :)

What was your favorite thing about your first trimester? I’m loving still being able to sleep on my belly!

My favorite part of the first trimester is the ‘secret’! Due to losing our first baby at 13 weeks, we tried to keep each of our other four pregnancies a secret for the entire first trimester. I enjoyed sharing the secret of our precious babies with my husband – it was a very intimate time for us to have knowledge of a child when no one else knew… and it was fun to cover up things like nausea and a growing tummy. It was a bit funny when my older two children couldn’t figure out why mommy wouldn’t jump on the trampoline with them any more. They still bring that up – 3 years later – with a giggle.
