Geeking Out!

I have been geeking out this past week. If you’re following @sistersncloth on Twitter, you may have already figured this out. It all started with a box that came in the mail on Tuesday.

How had the preservation of mind to snap a picture before ripping into this box, I don't know!

Inside that huge box were a few miscellaneous baby items – changing pad covers, baby blankets, bibs, burp cloths. And cloth diapers. Oh. my. word. At least 90% of the space in that box was taken up with diapers! Pockets, prefolds, covers, hemp, even wool!! A super sweet, awesome friend passed on her stash to me, and I am so overwhelmed by her generosity.

To fully understand the magnitude of my geeking out, I need to explain something. As I’ve mentioned before, one of the main reasons I got started cloth diapering was to save money. Because of that, I’ve built my stash as frugally as possible. I started out with just flats, most of which were receiving blankets, and a minimal number of covers (I had 3 for my first cloth diapered newborn!). I was able to add a few secondhand prefolds and extra covers along the way. I got a free tester SmartiPants before their big release, and snapped up a few secondhand. I won a bumGenius, which became my go-to nighttime diaper. But I have never had what most would consider a “good” stash, or even “enough” diapers. With two in diapers full time, I could make it every other day washing if I was lucky, and I was normally down to the last diaper or two by the time I got them out of the dryer.

This lovely box completely exploded my stash!! I went from barely scraping by, to overflowing with lovely, fun, fluff! In addition to that, I live in an area where very few people use cloth diapers, and there are no cloth diaper retailers. I had never even seen that much fluff!

Nehemiah with about half my stash - I think he likes them!

I am having a blast “getting to know” all my new diapers, and seeing how they all look and function on my boys. Here are a few of the highlights of my new stash!

One size white Blueberry pockets: I have about twenty of these! At first I was a little disappointed. So many white diapers! I had never really seen the appeal of white, but oh well, they would work as well as another color, right? It turns out white is surprisingly adorable! I love how fresh and clean it looks, and it matches everything! But I don’t just like the color of these diapers. The fit is great on both my boys, and they hold up well for my heavy wetter, at least during the day.

BumGenius Elemental (I think that’s what it is): All cotton inside, and sooo soft and squishy! No stuffing, no folding, it’s truly snap and go, and is one of my favorites.

SmartiPants, Hot Chocolate: I squealed when I saw this diaper! SmartiPants are one of my favorite brands, and this color is amazing. Pictures can not do it justice, but I seriously want to jump around with joy when I look at it. I may have a few times ;) Remember, I’m geeking out here!!

Love this view!

Two Dasani wool covers: More squealing, geeking out, and calling Jeniffer so she could freak out with me! I’ve been drooling over wool since I started cloth diapering, but these are my first, and they are awesome! I love nursing my 8 month old son to sleep while he is wearing this, and I love how nice and comfortable it looks for him. Plus he has woken up dry every morning, and for my heavy wetter, that is always amazing!

I even have a great newborn stash, if I need one again ;)

I’ve also had fun solving the “problem” of storage! I’ve had to get a bit creative, but I found a three drawer rolling cart that I can use. Nehemiah’s pockets go in the top drawer, Isaiah’s in the second, prefolds and covers in the bottom drawer. Doublers, liners, hemp, fitteds, wipes, and wool covers all go in a dresser drawer, and I have a basket that I keep pins, diaper ointment, etc in.

Here’s a peek at my set up…

Nehemiah's clean at the moment pockets. Pictured: Thirsties Duo Wrap size 2, Applecheeks St. Lucia, and lots of Blueberry!

I am definitely not done geeking out over all my fun new fluff. I feel like a kid in a candy store! I still need to sit down and figure out exactly how much of what I have! Now that I can officially say I don’t “need” any more diapers, I definitely understand why people keep buying new ones. There are still so many great diapers out there! I think I might have the makings of a fluff addiction…

Do you geek out over cloth diapers? How big is your “stash”? Do you buy more diapers for needs or wants? Anything fun you’ve gotten new lately?

What an awesome stash you’ve got now! I’m trying to build my stash as frugally as possible too. I have some time (about 33 weeks) before my first lo and I’m trying to win as many cloth diapers as possible! So far, I’ve won 1 softbums, 1 goGreen, 2 osocozy, 1 bebegreens and 1 motherease. Happy stashing!

It is definitely possible to build a good, frugal stash! Like I said, I cloth diapered for over three years on a pretty bare bones one :) For some frugal ideas, you should check out our page under “Cloth Tips”, “Cloth Diapering from Birth to Potty Training on Around $100″. If you mix and match from those ideas and add in some great giveaway wins (we have several cloth diaper giveaways coming up over the next month or so, by the way!), you can have a great stash without investing a lot. I love that about cloth diapering!

I am extremely jealous of your stash.

I still can’t believe it’s mine! I even gave several things away already – there were several girl print covers and pockets that I passed on to Jeniffer for Abby, and a few more that I’m giving to another friend with a little girl. It’s sort of surreal still!

I am new to cloth diapering and in need of some more cloth diapers, so if there’s anyone out there that doesn’t use or need theirs anymore and would be interested in donating some, that would be a true blessing to me! My email is degallifords@yahoo.com.

I know what that’s like it! It is possible to get a decent stash without investing a lot upfront. If you check out local freecycle and craigslist, sometimes you can find free or cheap diapers on there. There’s also a group on facebook “Fluff Swappers” where people sell used diapers, and sometimes you can get a good deal there. We also have a page under our “Cloth Tips”, “Cloth Diapering from Birth to Potty Training on Around $100″ with several different options.
